GTE CALIFORNIA, COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF AMERICA AGREE TO NEW, 39-MONTH LABOR CONTRACT

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE California and the Communications Workers of America have reached a new, 39-month labor agreement, providing general wage increases of about 10 percent for most of the company's 12,000 hourly employees.
In addition, hourly employees could receive incentive compensation of as much as 1.8 percent in 1995 and 3 percent in 1996. The agreement also gives hourly employees the option of using either a managed health care plan or an HMO.
Other components of the pact limit hourly employee time off for jury duty to 10 workdays (80 hours) within a 12-month period, and allow some craft workers to voluntarily start their workday from their homes, if their jobs allow, rather than beginning and ending each workday at a company site.
"We believe this contract provides our hourly employees with an attractive wage and compensation plan, an excellent benefits program and more flexibility in choosing a health care option to meet their individual or family's needs," said Bud Green, GTE California regional director-human resources.
"We're also pleased that our hourly employees, like management, will start receiving a portion of their compensation, based on performance."
The agreement is effective immediately, with some provisions retroactive to Dec. 18, 1992. It would expire midnight, March 17, 1996. GTE California's hourly employees have been working under an extension of the old CWA-GTE contract that expired midnight, Dec. 17, 1992.
The CWA notified GTE that its hourly employees had ratified the new contract late this afternoon, after tallying mailed-in ballots.
GTE California, a telecommunications company based in Thousand Oaks, provides local and short-haul toll telephone service to about 3 million customers in 330 communities throughout the state.
