GTE AWARDS UCLA/GTE BASKETBALL SUPER SHOT WINNER

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- On Dec. 5, 1992, UCLA freshman Jonathan West sank four hoops in 30 seconds that will pay for a year's tuition and books. GTE Telephone Operations West Area President Larry Sparrow will present the sharpshooter his check during a first-half time-out at the Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m. UCLA/Oregon State game at Pauley Pavilion.
The four baskets happened at the halftime Super Shot Contest sponsored by GTE in which three randomly selected students attending the game had 30 seconds to hit a layup, free-throw, top-of-the-key 21-footer and a half-court 45-foot bomb.
The Super Shot Contest is held at each UCLA men's and women's home basketball game at halftime. The total award will be more than $3,000. The Super Shot Contest will be held throughout UCLA's men's and women's basketball seasons. GTE has a three-year agreement with UCLA to sponsor the Super Shot.
"I was really nervous," West said. "The layup wasn't too tough, but it took me three tries to hit the free throw and when the half- court shot went in, it was unbelievable."
The 6-foot-5 Agoura High School graduate is not unfamiliar with the basketball court. He played four years at Agoura High School, mostly at forward. It's not even the first-half court shot he's sunk. In a summer league during junior high school, he hit his first half-courter.
West's mother, Beth, is a speech pathologist at Willow Elementary School and Calabasas Elementary School. Roger, his father, is an attorney in Los Angeles. He's not the only West at UCLA. His sister, Rachel, is a senior at UCLA in English.
GTE replaced Nissan this year as the title sponsor of the halftime "Super Shot" as part of its ongoing commitment to UCLA and education throughout its serving territory.
GTE California services 3.1 million customers in 330 communities, mostly in Southern California.
