GTE ANNOUNCES RETAIL OUTLETS TO REMAIN OPEN FOR BUSINESS; PHONE MARTS TO OFFER CUSTOMERS ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Having met cost reduction requirements, GTEL, a deregulated telecommunications subsidiary of GTE California, announced today that five Phone Mart retail stores, earlier slated to close this month, will remain open for business.
This announcement cancels GTEL's announcement last December that five of the 16 Phone Marts would close as part of a company-wide cost-reduction plan.
The five affected Phone Mart stores are in Santa Maria (101 Santa Maria Towne Center); Santa Barbara (Loreta Plaza, 3311 State Street); Thousand Oaks (Janss Mall, 235-A N. Moorpark Rd.); West Los Angeles (Westside Pavilion, 10800 W. Pico Blvd.); and Palm Springs (Sunrise Square Center, 1755 N. Sunrise).
"We are very pleased these Phone Mart stores will remain open," said Tom Massey, area director for retail sales and service for GTEL. "We recognize how valuable they are to our customers. In fact, we are changing the Phone Marts to better serve customers."
Massey said that while some products will be discontinued, customers will benefit from the offering of more mobile products and services, such as paging, cellular and voice mail.
GTE California serves 3.1 million customers in 330 communities, mostly in Southern California.
