GTE AND RICHARD PETTY TO INTRODUCE NEW TECHNOLOGY
 AT NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES
DAYTONA, Fla., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- GTE Mobile Communications and Petty Enterprises bring new communications and safety technology to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series -- debuting at Daytona 500, this weekend.
GTE is working with Richard Petty to develop two new products. The first product, GTE HelmetPhone(TM), a cellular-equipped racing helmet, will offer Petty increased safety by eliminating the need for him to push a button to talk with the pit crew. GTE HelmetPhone also will allow full "duplex" communication (communication between two or more parties at the same time), without the static and time delay associated with previous forms of racing communications.
The second product -- on-board, real-time diagnostics -- allows the pit crew to monitor vital functions on the race car as it travels around the race course during test sessions to enhance driver control and safety on race day.
Dale Inman, crew chief of Petty Enterprises, said: "All of us on Richard's team are excited about the new technology from GTE. Since this is our final season, we think it's appropriate to go out with the newest in communications technology. With these new products, we can improve driver control and safety."
 Wireless Communications With Pit Crew
With HelmetPhone, Petty will use a specially designed cellular headset built into his race helmet to talk to his pit crew. In effect, Petty could communicate with his crew over one cellular telephone conversation lasting the entire race. The headset employs full duplex sound and a unique noise-reduction microphone.
GTE HelmetPhone also offers increased privacy. Monitoring of cellular transmissions is difficult and violates federal law. To further guarantee privacy, GTE Mobile Communications will unveil a portable scrambling device on HelmetPhone. Only the pit crew would be able to unscramble the driver's transmission.
The GTE HelmetPhone will be introduced during the Daytona 500 By STP at the Daytona International Speedway at Daytona Beach, Fla., on Feb. 16. Testing on the initial version of the on-board, real-time diagnostic system will also begin at Daytona. Expansions to the system are planned throughout the 1992 Winston Cup Series.
