GTE AND HERTZ TO DEPLOY GTE'S NEW CELLULAR CREDIT-CARD PHONE IN NEW YORK CITY

GTE AND HERTZ TO DEPLOY GTE'S NEW CELLULAR
CREDIT-CARD PHONE IN NEW YORK CITY
ATLANTA, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hertz Corp. and GTE (NYSE: GTE) today said that GTE's cellular credit-card phone will be installed in the Hertz rental-car fleet in New York City.
"The Hertz/GTE credit card phone program has been successful in other markets," said Roy Ritenour, manager-service quality for The Hertz Corp. "We're expanding deployment to several New York City locations because we've found that our business customers want the convenience of being able to stay in touch with the office while traveling. They also enjoy having immediate access to a total communications network with just the slide of a credit card."
Customers renting cars equipped with cellular credit-card phones are able to place and receive calls by activating the phone using a major credit card. Customers receive a detailed listing of their cellular- call charges on their monthly credit-card statements, which saves time since they are not confronted with additional charges at the rental desk. There is no daily phone-rental fee.
The GTE phone also allows customers "plug-in" access for facsimile and lap-top computer transmission. On-hook dialing and the convenience of hands-free operation, or "speaker-phone" capability, are additional new features.
With the proprietary GTE billing system, Hertz is relieved of all billing and administrative responsibilities because the phone automatically reports call data to GTE's billing center. The customer activates the phone by sliding an AT&T Calling Card, MasterCard, VISA, American Express or Diners Club Card through the phone's card reader.
GTE and Hertz signed a multi-year agreement in January 1990, and expect to install some 50,000 in-car credit-card phones during the term of the contract. (Details were not disclosed.) Hertz and GTE already have deployed credit-card phones in 21 markets, and roll-out plans continue.
 Customers Appreciate Easy-to-Use Features
"Our market research shows that customers want the phone's easy-to- use features," said Dave Smith, general manager of GTE's credit-card phone organization. "Our new credit-card phone makes deployment much easier. The unique design allows the phones to be used on any cellular system in North America."
The GTE phone will work on any cellular network due to one of five patent-pending design processes that allows the phone to collect calling-data information and upload it to GTE's billing system.
Cellular credit-card phones are currently used in rental cars, limousines, cabs, on off-shore drilling rigs, recreational and commercial ships, buses and in remote areas where no hard-wired telephones are available. At present, credit-card phones are deployed throughout the United States and Canada.
GTE Credit Card Phone is a part of GTE Mobile Communications, which provides support services to GTE's cellular interests. GTE provides cellular telecommunications products and services to more than 52 million "POPs" (POPs refers to the population of an area multiplied by the company's percentage ownership in the cellular system serving the area).
Hertz, the nation's leading car-rental company, operates a fleet of approximately 420,000 vehicles worldwide from over 5,000 locations in more than 120 countries.
GTE is the fourth-largest publicly owned telecommunications company in the world with approximately $20 billion in revenues in 1991.
