GST (in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada) Goods and Services Tax
Inc., manufacturer of innovative storage solutions, reports strong acceptance of their line of tape backup Using magnetic tape for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. Users can add an internal or external tape drive to their desktop computers for backup purposes, and files are typically copied to the tapes using a backup utility that updates on a periodic schedule.  solutions using Sony's Advanced Intelligent Tape (storage) Advanced Intelligent Tape - (AIT) A form of magnetic tape and drive using AME developed by Sony for storing large amounts of data. An AIT can store over 50 gigabytes and transfer data at six megabytes/second (in February 1999).  (AIT) technology. Much of the acceptance is credited to GST's patented 2x8 LCD Operator Display that uniquely provides real-time information about drive status and job progress. Buoyed by the strong showing of their iSeries line with AIT tape technology, GST has completed all engineering and validation testing for attaching their AIT tape storage products directly to servers with Unix, Linux and NT operating systems.

With this announcement, GST's AIT tape solutions now connect directly to all major small and midrange servers running under OS/400, AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , Windows, NT Sun Solaris, HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

and Linux. GST's AIT tape products can be switched easily from one server platform to another.

GST's AIT tape backup solutions offer the highest tape speeds and cartridge capacities for the price of any tape technologies available. A broad spectrum of drive speeds -- 37, 56 and 112GB/hour for AIT-1, AIT-2 and AIT-3 with compression -- meet most backup volume requirements.

"Our initial success with our AIT tape products in the iSeries market encouraged us to complete the engineering and testing for Unix, Linux and NT users," reports David Breisacher, CEO/chairman at GST. "The iSeries connectivity took a tremendous amount of engineering to accomplish. In contrast, getting these products to run on the more open systems in the Unix/Linux/NT world was quite straightforward and yielded excellent results."
