SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The Mayor's Advisory Committee on Growth voted Thursday to cap the committee at 16 members, despite critics' claims that the group would not represent all residents.

Formed to analyze growth in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , the committee has held several organizational meetings and members are scheduled to attend an all-day workshop Saturday.

Concerns over the makeup of the committee have plagued the group since Mayor Jo Anne Darcy first proposed it in January. The City Council approved the proposal in July.

The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state. , the area's largest developer, had requested a spot on the board, but was denied.

In July, Stevenson Ranch Stevenson Ranch, California (in the 91381 ZIP Code) is a Los Angeles County, USA, unincorporated community west of Santa Clarita a few miles south of Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. The Stevenson Ranch fountain was redone in 2007.  Town Council President Keith Pritsker said the mayor's unwillingness to include Lorrie Baldwin, leader of a petition drive to annex to Santa Clarita, could undermine support for the city's sphere of influence application. Stevenson Ranch sits outside the city, but within the area targeted by Santa Clarita in its proposed sphere, a means of gaining influence over outlying out·ly·ing

Darcy chose Jeff Stevenson, who works for the developer of the community that bears his family name. That appointment irked some residents who said Stevenson would push a pro-growth agenda, rather than represent residents.

Santa Clarita Councilman Frank Ferry also was upset by the committee's limited membership, telling Darcy that he thought he should have been included on the committee. He abstained from the vote that created the committee.

When the committee was first proposed, former Councilwoman Jill Klajic objected to having Darcy choose the membership on her own without any input from the council.
