GROUPS GET $69,000 FOR SPORTS TEAMS; FOOTBALL, WOMEN'S SOCCER COLLEGE OF CANYONS GOAL.

Community boosters who hope to return a football team to College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  and add a women's soccer team, have raised $69,000 in pledges toward that goal, a fund-raiser said Monday.

``We're one-third of the way to our goal of $200,000,'' said Greg Kincaid, chairman of the college's athletic expansion committee and a member of the College of the Canyons Foundation board of directors.

See Board of directors.  and several hundred visitors attended the two-hour event, which featured football and soccer kicking contests, and a reunion of about 25 of the college's former football players, Kincaid said. The campus disbanded its football program after the 1981 season.

The college board first approved the football-soccer project back in May. The main condition was that an increase in the number of Cougar teams not divert di·vert

The start-up costs would have to be raised from private donors. The College of the Canyons Foundation has agreed to mount a $200,000 campaign for expanding campus athletic programs.

Being self-sufficient means the football program would have to generate enough revenue from ticket sales, sponsorships, donations and booster clubs A booster club is an organization that is formed to contribute money to an associated club, sports team, or organization. Booster clubs are popular in American schools at the high school and university level.  to meet its needs.

One money-making idea being considered is selling stadium ``sponsorships'' which would allow the name of 7,300-seat Cougar Stadium to be changed to that of the donor or sponsor, Kincaid said.
