GROUP READY TO PLANT REDWOODS ABOVE PARK.

Byline: Daily News

Recovering drug addicts will plant 200 redwood trees on a mesa overlooking the city's new central park in a program to rehabilitate both human volunteers and the landscape.

The nonprofit Redwoods Recovery Group, based in Newbury Park, will begin work Sunday on land overlooking the 137-acre park site on Bouquet Canyon Road.

The first six trees will be planted this weekend. The Redwoods Recovery Group uses paid workers and volunteers who are recovering alcoholics and ex-drug addicts to plant trees. The Bouquet Canyon Grove will benefit the community on many levels, said John McDonald, the organization's president and chairman of the board.

Residents of local recovery houses and violence-prevention programs regard it as an honor to plant the grove, he said. ``Participants must remain clean and sober to continue their participation in this project.''
