GROUP GIVES HONOR TO SENIOR OF THE YEAR FIRMS CATERING TO OLDER CUSTOMERS RECOGNIZED.

NEWHALL - The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Committee on Aging held its 27th annual meeting Jan. 17, honoring an outstanding senior and a local company for their support of the local senior community.

The Senior of the Year award is presented annually to a local senior whose independence, dignity and quality of life serves as an inspiration to his or her peers. This year's honoree, Virginia ``Ginny'' Carter, is a delightful and upbeat asset to the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``She has been a mainstay of our volunteer program for many years, always willing to help out anywhere that she is needed,'' Harper said.

Also honored was Blue Barrel Disposal, which received the Circle of Friendship award for its service to the senior community and sponsorship of Senior Center events.

``We have several business partnerships, but we know we can always rely on Blue Barrel,'' Harper said.

Other businesses that were recognized were Frontier Toyota for donating two trucks to the Home Delivered Meals program in the past year; ATC/VANCOM for providing bus transportation for seniors as part of the Dial-a-Ride program; College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  for providing volunteers and for sponsoring

Soroptimist International and the Zonta Club were recognized for their support of the senior center, as were Santa Clarita City Council members Marsha McLean and Bob Kellar. A special award was presented to Lolly Cole, who recently retired after 22 years at the Senior Center, and to Sierra Vista eighth-grader Robert Ward Robert Ward (born September 13, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American composer. Early work and education
Ward was one of five children of the owner of a moving and storage company. As a boy he sang in church choirs and local opera theaters.
, who routinely updates the center's Web site and is known as the ``Senior Center Web Master.''
