GROUP FINDS DANGER LURKING IN TOYS.

Byline: Deborah Adamson Daily News Staff Writer

There's trouble in toy land for young children this Christmas.

On its annual list of dangerous toys Wikipedia: Pages needing attention/Culture and Arts

Dangerous Toys was an Austin, Texas-based hard rock band with a rough sound and often humorous lyrics. Their music can be categorized as sleaze metal, along side bands like L.A. Guns, Roxx Gang, and Guns N' Roses.

``We want to tell parents and other care-givers that they need to be aware of the dangers in these toys,'' Pam Pressley, consumer advocate for CalPIRG, said Tuesday in Mar Vista. ``We found a lot of toys that violated the small parts rule.''

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 21 toy-related deaths in 1995, including eight from choking on balloons. In 1994, there were 18 deaths.

While the labeling of toys has improved in the last two years with the passage of the 1994 Child Safety Protection Act, CalPIRG still found lots of violators.

Mattel, Lego and Tomy are among toy makers on the list of dangerous play things.

But Mattel spokeswoman Lisa McKendall said its product, Disney's 101 Dalmatians Puppy Pal, is ``clearly labeled with a large label `warning: choking hazard.' '' The toy is marked for use by kids ages 3 and up.

CalPIRG said that while several toys are labeled for an older group, they are still considered unsafe if they have ``play value'' for younger kids.

Toys have ``play value'' if they are in bright primary colors those developed from the solar beam by the prism, viz., red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, which are reduced by some authors to three, - red, green, and violet-blue. These three are sometimes called fundamental colors.

with Mattel's Dalmatian toy, McKendall said ``that's true of any product you bring into the home.''

If the toys are used for their intended age group, then there shouldn't be a problem, said Lego spokesman David Lafrennie. Lego has one toy on the list - the Lego System Trial Size Imagination building set.

Lafrennie said the ``list is totally and unequivocally erroneous. Lego toys have been and continue to be safe.''

McKendall added that the key is really parental supervision Parental supervision is a parenting technique that involves looking after, or monitoring a child's activities.

Young children are generally incapable of looking after themselves, and incompetent in making informed decisions for their own well-being.
: ``It's important for parents to watch over their children.''

Parents should ask themselves these questions before buying a toy:

Does the child put things in his or her mouth?

Is the child old enough for the toy?

What is the child going to do with the toy?

Can it be used in an unsafe manner?
