GROUP FIGHTS LANDFILL GROWTH STATE BOARD MULLS DUMP EXPANSION.

A handful of Sunshine Canyon Landfill neighbors urged state officials Monday to block expansion into Granada Hills, saying the full environmental impact of the dump had not been adequately studied.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board is expected to vote next Tuesday on Browning Ferris Industries' request for a permit to build an 84-acre landfill inside the city limits, adjacent to the existing dump in unincorporated Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County. The permit would cover only the first five-year phase, but BFI BFI - brute force and ignorance  ultimately aims to join its city and county landfills into a single dump capable of holding 90 million tons of trash.

Testifying in Sacramento, North Valley Coalition President Wayde Hunter criticized the incremental permitting of the landfill, saying the waste board should consider the future expansions of the project and their impacts.

 told the waste board committee the company had always envisioned a joint city-county landfill and had completed the environmental studies for the project. He also said the landfill was needed to meet the region's disposal needs.

County officials have threatened to stop the dumping of waste from inside city limits until city officials agree to allow the expansion.

The Waste Management Board is scheduled to conduct another public hearing and vote on the proposed permit at 3 p.m. May 13 in Sacramento.
