GROUP CHOOSES FINAL DESIGN FOR ROSE PARADE FLOAT ENTRY.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

BURBANK - The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association has chosen its design for its float entry in the Rose Parade on Jan. 1, 2005, featuring a family of bears at a barbecue barbecue [West Indian or South American], in the United States, traditionally an open-air gathering, political or social, in which meats are roasted whole over a pit of embers and food and drink are liberally enjoyed. , with the inattentive in·at·ten·tive

of the design will be presented tonight to the City Council for its approval. The city is providing $67,500 to the association for the float.

``The theme of the parade is 'Celebrate Family,''' said Teri Bastian, president of the nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

The idea for the float came from Bill and Carol Cotter cot·ter

Technical scale drawings are being prepared for the float, and the association's decoration committee is considering color schemes for the float and deciding which flowers should be used.

to be presented to the council was done by artist Stacia Martin of Brea, a friend of the Cotters, and it presents the concept of the float, but not the specifics of its construction.

``The finished (float) still won't look exactly like the drawing, but it will be pretty close,'' said Bob Hutt, vice president of administration for the association.

The float will be built in a covered area called The Barn at a Burbank Water and Power facility at 320 N. Lake St. It will be one of only six floats in the parade that is built completely by volunteers, Hutt said.

Last year, the association's float featured a singing cowboy cowboy

on a bluff with three cows below him. That entry won the Queen's Trophy at the parade, which is given to the float that makes the best use of roses.

``I guess usually we've done more humorous things. ... It's a lot easier to make a cartoony kind of a character than something that looks really like a realistic, human kind of a character,'' Hutt said.

The association's members chose the concept for the float entry, which is called ``Dinner's On ... FIRE!'' with a secret vote. There were more than 80 submissions, and other designs included a family tree and a family of dinosaurs <onlyinclude> This list of dinosaurs is a comprehensive listing of all genera that have ever been included in the superorder Dinosauria, excluding class Aves (birds, both living and those known only from fossils) and purely vernacular terms. .

The float will have a combination of fresh and dried flowers and movement, with papa bear swiveling from side to side as he tries to swat a bee. It will also have a smoke machine to make the ``fire'' on the barbecue look more realistic.

Cold-pressure welding is accomplished by the application of high pressure at room temperature; forge welding (forging) is done by means of hammering, with the addition of heat.  work on the frame of the float will begin in the summer, and then chicken wire will be used to create the form of the characters and scenery on the float.

From Dec. 26 until the end of the year, more than 100 volunteers a day will put flowers on the float. Volunteers are expected to come from as far away as Texas and British Columbia British Columbia, province (2001 pop. 3,907,738), 366,255 sq mi (948,600 sq km), including 6,976 sq mi (18,068 sq km) of water surface, W Canada. The total cost of entering a float could be in the $80,000 range, Hutt said. The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association will raise funds to supplement its $67,500 funding from the city.

Volunteers who want to work on the float can call the Burbank Tournament of Roses Association at (818) 840-0060.
