GROUND BROKEN FOR NEW FASCIA PRODUCTION FACILITY
 AT CHRYSLER'S BELVIDERE ASSEMBLY PLANT
BELVIDERE, Ill., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) announced construction has begun on a new fascia production facility at the Belvidere (Ill.) Assembly Plant as part of preparations for production of the company's new small car.
Investment for the plant, including building and equipment is about $15 million. The facility will cover 34,000 square feet and adjoins the main Belvidere plant.
The fascias, which are portions of the front and rear of a vehicle, are molded from a material know as thermal plastic olefin (TPO). Four 3,000-ton Cincinnati Milacron molding machines, each weighing almost a million pounds, will produce the fascias.
The prime contractor for the project is J.P. Cullin of Janesville, Wis. Completion of the building is expected in the spring of next year and equipment installation will begin at that time.
Belvidere is the first Chrysler assembly plant that will have an adjoining fascia molding facility.
While production of Chrysler's next generation small car, code named PL, is not scheduled to begin for more than a year, preparatory work has been going on for some time at the Belvidere plant.
Construction of a $109 million satellite stamping plant began in September and the building exterior is fully erected. Work is continuing there to prepare for the installation of the presses, planned for next spring.
