GROUND BROKEN FOR ADOBE'S RENOVATION.

Byline: Jason Kandel Staff Writer

Agoura Hills city officials celebrated the groundbreaking Saturday for restoration of one of the city's prize historic sites, the 200-year-old Reyes Adobe.

``It's really a community achievement,'' said Agoura Hills Mayor Jeff Reinhardt. ``You go back east and there are so many resources - George Washington slept here, Revolutionary War battle sites, Civil War battle sites. We don't have a lot here for our kids.''

Through grants, state ballot initiatives and money from the city's general fund, officials will begin on Monday landscaping the grounds and furnishing the three-room adobe with furniture from the early 1800s.

A barn will become a museum, with photos and text documenting the history of the site, which was a working cattle ranch, a travelers outpost and a fort.

``Now we finally have an opportunity to have a place of our own A Place of Our Own is a daily program about child care that airs on PBS, produced in Los Angeles by KCET. The adobe, which is expected to be completed next May, was built between 1790 and 1820 by Jose Reyes and Maria Altagracia Reyes de Vejar, who raised cattle that grazed graze 1

Since Nov. 2001, with the creation of an advisory committee, officials have been working to bring back this piece of California history.

It took about six months to get the committee off the ground, and then, in June 2002, the committee held its first meeting. Numerous proposals were made, and finally things fell in place.
