GRIM SEASON GETS GRIMMER ANGELS LOSE GAME; KENNEDY HURT TEXAS 12, ANGELS 3.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - It should be a day for taking bows and, perhaps, saying goodbye. But in this grim season, the Angels aren't even afforded that opportunity.

Today, their 2003 campaign will come to a merciful end, in a meaningless game against the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. During the republic they became established as the guardians of the Texas frontier, particularly against Native Americans.  that could be the final home game at Edison Field for several players, not that most of them will be able-bodied anyway.

David Eckstein David Mark Eckstein, (born January 20, 1975 in Sanford, Florida), is a Major League Baseball shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is noted for his size, as he is a small (for professional sports) 5' 7", but weighs 175 pounds. ? The fan-favorite shortstop missed his fourth consecutive game Saturday and will not play today, his next meaningful activity consisting of therapy and rehabilitation in Arizona for his irritated right hamstring.

Adam Thomas Kennedy (born January 10, 1976 in Riverside, California) is a Major League Baseball player. He currently plays second base for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Kennedy will be examined Monday by a hand-and-wrist specialist to determine if the former Cal State Northridge star will need surgery.

Then, there's Scott Spiezio.

in Angels lore thanks to his unforgettable World Series home run a year ago, Spiezio is one of just three regulars who will be available to play today. He's also the only free agent among that group, and while he'd like to be back and the Angels want him back, the team's capacity to offer a role that's agreeable to him appears more unlikely.

The uncertainty surrounding players the Angels do have a financial commitment to creates more uncertainty for Spiezio. Thanks to his bum right hamstring, center fielder Darin Erstad's future might be at first base, which is Spiezio's position. Spiezio also can play third, and the Angels might need him there for insurance if Troy Glaus' recovery from a slightly torn rotator cuff rotator cuff

 doesn't go smoothly.

But Spiezio doesn't want to be an insurance policy. He wants an everyday job, something he's earned from last year's breakthrough .285, 82-RBI season. After a slow start this year, Spiezio has rallied to hit .263, with 16 homers and 81 RBI RBI

With the Angels most likely unable to offer him an everyday job right away, Spiezio said it's almost a certainty he won't sign with them during the team's exclusive 15-day negotiating period immediately following the World Series.

``I would say so,'' he said of signing later rather than sooner, ``unless there's something they say to me that indicates they want me and will be a big part of the team. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what their plans are and they probably don't, either. Until there's more information, it's not worth thinking about.

``We haven't had any discussions. I've been here four years and I trust (manager) Mike (Scioscia) and (general manager) Bill (Stoneman) will be honest with me if and when we have discussions. I'll base it on what they say.''

Spiezio provided the lone highlight Saturday, ripping a double off Lewis in the sixth inning and motoring home when Texas right fielder Jason Jones played it poorly off the wall for a two-base error. But Texas already led 7-2 by then, thanks to a so-so five-inning outing from Ramon Ortiz and a one-inning, four-run stint by reliever Greg Jones.
