GREUEL, WEISS URGE TRAFFIC PLAN.

With near-gridlock squeezing Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  motorists, city officials called Wednesday for development of a strategic plan to try to ease the problems.

Council members Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007.  and Jack Weiss Jack Weiss, is a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 5th district. Weiss was elected in 2001 and reelected in 2005. The 5th district includes parts of the Westside and the San Fernando Valley.  introduced the proposal, calling on the city Department of Transportation to work with Caltrans and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The plan would review everything from freeways to traffic lights to try to help untangle traffic woes consistently identified as one of the most significant problems facing the city.

Weiss said he was surprised the city had not taken such action earlier.

"To me, it's a kind of municipal malpractice not to have had a strategic master plan in place," Weiss said.

Greuel said the process will include all sections of the city, City Council members, the Mayor's Office, city commissions, neighborhood councils, homeowner groups and other government agencies.

"It's not going to be something that comes together overnight," Greuel said. "We need a long-range vision that identifies a general set of directives and initiatives to improve the transit system."

The council Wednesday also supported legislation by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, to create a special statistical district for the Wilshire Corridor.

The measure is needed for state agencies to develop a common set of data on demographics, economics and other conditions to qualify for state and federal funding.
