The project design is due by September, and the first phase of construction is scheduled to start in April and end in November next year.

In the second phase of the project, a vehicular and pedestrian bridge will be built over the Verdugo flood control channel Flood control channels are a series of large, concrete, and empty (except when a flood is actually present) open-air channels that extend a ways below the street levels of some larger cities, so that if and when a flood occurs, the flood will run into the channels, and proceed to be , and a short walkway will link the Glendale RiverWalk to a new trail along the river from the Verdugo Wash south to Los Feliz Boulevard.

In a third phase, multijurisdictional collaboration will be required to build a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Los Angeles River from Flower Street to the Ferraro Soccer Fields in Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. Construction dates have not yet been established for second and third phases.

``I think what will ultimately occur is we can end up connecting with other projects ... to expand hiking, biking and equestrian opportunities people have,'' said Iacono.

Under the Los Angeles River Master Plan, adopted by county government in 1995, cities along the flood-control channel would improve the banks and transform them into a public greenbelt corridor.

With the $500,000 allocated for the first phase of the project, Pamela Burton & Co. will get $62,000 for design services, and the rest will be spent on construction.
