GREEN ISLE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES, INC. ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT ON TIMETABLE FOR PLANT REPAIRS AT FLORIDA FACILITY

HOPKINS, Minn., Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Green Isle Environmental Services, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: GIES) (formerly Reuter, Inc.) announced today that it reached an agreement with the Pembroke Pines City Commission on Nov. 18, 192?, to shut down most of the activities at the Pembroke Pines, Fla. facility starting Nov. 24, 1992. The purpose of the shutdown is to minimize further odor emanation until some major odor related repairs can be made. In this connection, the compost hanger will continue to operate for the six weeks necessary for the current curing process to be completed on material already in the hanger. The plant will continue to receive solid waste from the cities and re-load it for delivery to disposal points. The facility shutdown is currently expected to continue until the end of February 1993.
As background, there have been intermittent odor complaints from some residents in the surrounding area, and Reuter Recycling of Florida, Inc. has received three Notices of Violation from the Broward County Office of Natural Resource Protection.
James Taylor, president and chief executive officer said, "The first Notice of Violation resulted in an approved mitigation order which gives Reuter Recycling of Florida, Inc. until May 9, 1993 to correct the situation. We believe that the Florida facility can be in compliance with the regulations by that time. The second and third Notices of Violation were consolidated and a hearing date of Jan. 22 has been established."
Taylor said, "As announced last week, the company entered into an arrangement with the lender to the Florida facility wherein Green Isle Environmental Services, Inc. would continue to manage the Florida facility, but will have no ongoing financial obligation related to this facility. As a result, any losses resulting from the shutdown and repair will not affect Green Isle's financial situation or financial statements. The funding for the odor related repairs will be supplied by the lender to the facility."
Headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., the company owns and operates a waste processing and recycling facility in Eden Prairie, Minn., and manages and operates a recycling and composting facility in Pembroke Pines, Fla.. The company also manufactures computer disk drive spindles, other machined items and plastic refuse containers, and owns and operates a refuse collection system in Louisiana. The common stock of Green Isle Environmental Services, Inc. (formerly Reuter, Inc.) is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System with the symbol GIES.
