Ancient Greek MusicThe music of ancient Greece was inseparable from poetry and dancing. It was entirely monodic, there being no harmony as the term is commonly understood. The earliest music is virtually unknown, but in the Homeric era a national musical culture existed that was looked upon by later generations as a "golden age. and dancing, are part of the annual Greek Food Festival today at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds. Sponsored by St. Constantine and Helens Greek Orthodox Church in Lancaster, the festival runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the fairgrounds, 2551 W. Ave. H. Admission is free. Parking is $3. Entertainment will start at 11:30 a.m., with youth folk dancers performing at 12:30, 2, 4:30 and 6 p.m. Festival visitors can join in for dance lessons at 1, 2:30 and 5 p.m. The main food line will sell dishes that include marinated Greek lamb chops, dolma (stuffed grape leaves), pastichio (Greek lasagna) and spanakopita (spinach pita). The sweets line will sell baklava, galaktobouriko (custard cake), date cake and other delicacies. The coffee booth will sell Greek and American coffee as well as Greek blended ice coffee. |
