GREAT LAKES DISTRICT TO MERGE INTO ATLANTIC COAST DISTRICT
NEW YORK, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Great Lakes District of the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO, will merge into the Atlantic Coast District effective today, according to an announcement made by John Bowers, the union's president.
Bowers said Atlantic Coast District locals gave unanimous approval for the merger.
John Baker, president of the ILA's Great Lakes District President said from his Cleveland, offices that Great Lakes District delegates already approved the merger with the ACD District at their special convention held last March.
Since then, Baker has been meeting with Bowers, who is also president of the Atlantic Coast District; Harold Daggett, the ACD secretary-treasurer and Richard P. Hughes, the ACD general vice president, to finalize language of the proposed merger.
According to Bowers and Baker, the merger will allow the ILA to maintain its strong presence at Great Lakes ports, especially in organizing new workers and in contract negotiations with employers.
As part of the new merger agreement, the Great Lakes District has requested that the International issue a charter for a new affiliated subordinate body of the Atlantic Coast District to be known as the Great Lakes Dock and Marine Council.
The merger agreement also will call for the ACD constitution to be amended for the election of two additional ACD vice presidents who shall be from the geographic area formerly comprising the Great Lakes District.
The Atlantic Coast District will now embrace every Atlantic port, north of Cape Hatteras including all Canadian and Newfoundland ports, every port of the Island of Puerto Rico and shall also embrace all ports on the Great Lakes and tributary waters.
