GREAT LAKES COMMENTS ON STOCK ACTIVITY
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Emerson Kampen,

Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (NYSE: GLK) today commented on the unusual trading activity in the Company's stock.
Kampen stated, "I know of no reason that would account for the recent performance of our stock. The Company's fundamentals have not changed and our prospects have never been brighter.
"Earnings for the month of July increased over 50 percent from last year and are well ahead of our forecast," he continued. "The first half of 1992 has proven to be highly gratifying and we view the next six months with optimism for continuing that trend."
The Company recently reported its highest financial results ever for a six-month period. For the six months ending June 30,1992, earnings grew to a record $111,812,000, or $1.57 per share, up 41 percent from the first half of 1991. Revenues improved to $743,300,000, which is 9 percent higher than the $683,670,000 reported for the first half of last year.
Kampen added, "We continue to take the necessary steps to extend our research, manufacturing and marketing expertise to new markets in industries very familiar to us. Two of the Company's most recent moves, announced last week, include the acquisition of Ward Blenkinsop and Company, Ltd., and the purchase of the remaining 50 percent of Octel Associates' French affiliate. The combined affect will add approximately $75 million in revenues, while augmenting our earnings immediately."
Kampen concluded, "At the same time, we are evaluating new opportunities that not only enhance our strengths, but will meet similar high growth, high profitability standards currently afforded us in our existing businesses. Two other non-dilutive acquisitions appear imminent and could be consummated within the next sixty days, which would have a significant impact on our revenues and earnings for years to come."
Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, is the world's leading producer of bromine, brominated chemicals and furfural derivatives for such applications as flame retardants, agriculture, oil and gas well completion fluids, water sanitizers and other specialty applications.
