GRATEFUL GOOD-BYE; GLENDALE SAYS THANKS TO GIVENS, ZARIAN.Byline: Lee Condon Daily News Staff Writer Area politicians and local residents gathered Thursday for a special farewell celebration for Mayor Eileen Givens and veteran Councilman Larry Zarian Larry Zarian (b.1937) was the first Armenian-American to serve on the city council in the City of Glendale, California. He also served as Glendale Mayor. He currently serves on the California Transportation Commission. . Givens and Zarian will leave office Monday. Both chose not to seek re-election this year. Zarian has been on the City Council since 1983, and Givens joined in 1991. About 200 people attended the event at Parcher Plaza behind Glendale City Hall, including Assemblyman as·sem·bly·man n. Schiff asked the crowd. ``They have done a wonderful service for this community.'' Wildman thanked the pair for the warm welcome he received from the council when he was elected, even though he's a Democrat and Givens and Zarian are Republicans. ``I really don't understand why Larry and Eileen would want to give up their 16-hour-a-day job that pays them no money and makes everyone hate them,'' Wildman said. Burbank Vice Mayor Stacey Murphy thanked Zarian for his work on behalf of the city as a board member for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. ``This community has so much to be grateful for. Thank you for your years of service,'' Murphy said. Burbank Councilman Bill Wiggins praised Givens not just for her representation of Glendale but her work on regional issues. ``Eileen is honest, dedicated and open-minded. Our region is losing a wonderful public servant,'' Wiggins said. On Monday, the council and staff will say their good-byes at a special meeting at Glendale City Hall, in which new council members Gus Gomez and Rafi Manoukian Rafi Manoukian is a former member of the city council in Glendale, California. He was recently notified that he has been selected by the Board of Directors and the Selection Committee of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) as a recipient of the 2006 Ellis Island will be sworn in.
