GRANT TO HELP YOUTH CLUB'S SPORTS PROJECTS.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``We are very happy to receive this and it's going to do a lot of nice things for the kids in Canyon Country,'' said Jim Ventress, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club. ``Any dollars we get at this point is very important.''

The $6.2 million project was praised as an example of public-private partnership as the city of Santa Clarita and the William S. Hart High School District The William S. Hart Union High School District serves the City of Santa Clarita, California. The total number of enrolled students is over 20,000. The superintendent of Hart School District is Jaime L. Castellanos. The District is named after William S.  joined the club in funding its club headquarters.

All three will share the 27,000-square-foot facility, with its gym, classrooms, teen center and meeting rooms. Sierra Vista students will have classes there, while the city will have access to the gym and meeting rooms for its programs.

The $62,391 grant will help the club lay the gym floor, purchase glass backboards for the basketball nets and the cranks to lift the baskets, Ventress said. The money will also help buy pingpong tables and volleyball equipment; both are Olympic sports.

So far, the club has raised $5.4 million of its goal.

``Since inception in 1985, the AAF has reinvested more than $125 million to serve youth through sport in Southern California,'' Chairman John C. Argue said. ``Hundreds of thousands of youngsters have already benefited from the legacy of the 1984 Olympic Games, and through these grants and AAF programs, many more will join them.''
