 through a $20,000 grant from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, officials said Thursday.

Peter and the Wolf is a composition by Sergei Prokofiev written in 1936 after his return to the Soviet Union. It is a children's story (with both music and text by Prokofiev), spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra.

``For many folks in the valley, this will be the first time for them to hear classical music,'' said Donald Crane, the orchestra board president.

The grant money will be distributed by the Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  Foundation. Besides funding the Youth Concert Series, the grant money will support the orchestra's established Bach competition for young musicians and its youth ticket program.

Officials also released the orchestra's upcoming concert season.

The season will open Sept. 30 with the ``Ode to Joy'' concert featuring Beethoven's ``Overture, The Consecration of the House'' and ``Symphony No. 9 in D minor.'' Performers will include soprano soloist Hyun-Joo Kim, mezzo-soprano mezzo-soprano: see soprano.  Alis Clausen, tenor Bon-Won Kye and bass James Scot Sykon.

The ``Holiday Harmonies'' concert Dec. 2 will feature the Master Chorale presenting traditional and contemporary Christmas and Hanukkah songs.

The Feb. 10 ``Love and Adventure'' concert will feature the 2001 Bach competition winners in addition to the orchestra performing Bizet's farandole from ``L'Arlesienne,'' Prokofiev's ``Peter and the Wolf'' and Tchaikovsky's overture to ``Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet

The ``Sensuous Strings'' concert March 31 will present Barber's ``Adagio for Strings "Adagio for Strings" is a work for string orchestra, arranged by the American composer Samuel Barber from his first string quartet. It is Barber's most popular piece. Genesis

,'' Vivaldi's ``Spring'' from his ``Four Seasons,'' Bartok's ``Divertimento'' and Grieg's ``Holberg Suite.''

The season will conclude with ``Romantic Renaissance'' on May 12 featuring Brahms' ``A German Requiem'' with soprano Deborah Mayhan and baritone Aram Barsamian.

Two additional community performances are scheduled for Sept. 16 at Marie Kerr Park and Oct. 21 at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center. The Oct. 21 performance is with the Electric Light Orchestra II.

The Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Master Chorale are both under the direction of David Newby. All concerts will be at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, 750 W. Lancaster Blvd.

Tickets for the concerts are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and $8 for those under age 18. Season tickets for all five concerts are $60 for adults, $55 for seniors and $30 for under-18s. Half-season tickets for any three concerts are $39 for adults, $36 for seniors and $18 for under-18s.

Youth Concert Series shows are booked through local schools.
