GRANT FUNDS TO HELP ADD FACILITIES AT YOUTH CENTER; ACTIVITIES TO STEER YOUNGSTERS CLEAR OF GANGS.

An indoor sports center, computer-training rooms and a television studio are planned at an anti-gang organization's office following approval of a $295,000 grant.

The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Regional Park and Open Space District grant will fund the new facilities at United Community Action Network.

 executive director and a former Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
 trustee. ``We want them to be comfortable.''

Among the features planned by the 8-year-old youth-counseling center will be batting cages, a youth game and activity room, and paving for additional parking.

``We've fared very well,'' said Pricer. ``We see this as a showplace.''

UCAN moved into its new facilities at 44231 Division St. six months ago. Pricer expects the improvements to be completed by July 1.

The nonprofit center had outgrown its former offices in a business park along Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  in Palmdale. The new location, in a former health club, gives it nearly three times its original space.

The center went from six to 13 counseling offices, enlarged its computer training center and added a child care area, Pricer said. The gym's former racquetball racquetball, sport played indoors by two or four players, combining elements of court handball and such racket games as squash racquets. It is played on a standard handball court 40 ft (12.2 m) long, 20 ft (6.  court will be used for youth recreation, workshops and job training.

Currently, UCAN serves about 9,000 youths annually. Its programs includes talks by ex-convicts about the reality of life in prison; a baseball league; a 24-hour help line; drama and theater instruction; a first-time offender diversion program A diversion program in the criminal justice system is a program run by a district attorney's office designed to enable offenders of criminal law (usually minor offenses) to avoid criminal charges [1][2]. , and one-on-one and group counseling for youths and parents.
