``Grandchildren are very special. This is my special way of showing they are special,'' she said.

Beck, who brought a camera to take pictures of Courtney and her class, was among the more than 128 grandparents who visited the campus for its seventh annual Grandparents Day.

Activities include playing games, reading, making cards and miniature books, and drawing pictures.

Also partaking of the lunchtime meal was Jim Varner, 62, of Palmdale, who sat with his granddaughter, 9-year-old Caitlin Enomoto, in the cafeteria.

``I was the only one who lived close, so I came to be with her,'' said Varner, a semiretiree who works in a warehouse. ``It's really good to be with her.''

Caitlin, a fourth-grader, said it was good to have her grandfather there. ``He's nice. He hugs and kisses For the XML format, see .
