 GRANDMET ACQUIRES PREMIUM GOURMET SOUP BUSINESS
 FURTHER STRENGTHENING ITS POSITION IN GROWING GERMAN MARKET
 MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Grand Metropolitan has today announced the acquisition of Jurgen Langbein GmbH, one of Germany's leading premium soup manufacturers. Jurgen Langbein is privately owned. The details of the transaction are not being disclosed. Completion is expected before the end of December.
 This acquisition strengthens the position of Pillsbury GmbH in the growing German ready meal and soup market where it already holds the number one market position in ready meals and the number two market position in canned soups with its Erasco brand.
 Jurgen Langbein manufactures and markets a line of premium gourmet soups, glass jarred desserts and soup bases throughout Germany. It also exports products to the UK, and other European markets.
 Peter Thompson, joint chief operating officer of GrandMet's Food Sector said: "Jurgen Langbein makes an excellent addition to our German soups and ready-meals businesses. It is known for its outstanding product quality and excellent facilities and we look forward to building its position as a premium brand in its sector."
 Jurgen Langbein's principal production site is in Northern Germany. Over the last three years sales have grown at more than 15 percent annually.
 Other leading Pillsbury brands in Germany include Erasco ready meals, as well as canned soups; Jokisch ready meals; Hoffman Menu and DK-Menu frozen ready meals for the catering trade, Goldstein frozen gateaux and cakes, and Caldino frozen savoury products.
 The terms of the acquisition are not material to GrandMet's shareholders funds.
 Grand Metropolitan PLC is one of the largest international companies in the United Kingdom and a world leader in drinks, retailing, and food. Sales are in excess of $15 billion. Other U.S. subsidiaries include ALPO Petfoods, Burger King, Carillon Importers, GrandMet Foodservice USA, Haagen-Dazs, Heublein, the Paddington Corporation, Pearle Inc., and Pillsbury.
