GRANDMA GETS GIFT OF GLIDE DRUG STORE STAFFERS SURPRISE SENIOR WITH NIFTY WALKER.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

NEWHALL - There's a new spring in Sylvia Sand's step and she ``smiles like a hyena'' as she struts with her new red walker up Valley Street.

The Cruiser, the envy of the retirement set at Valley Oaks Village, was a gift from the crew at Sav-on Drug Store in Valencia, a block away. Employees knew her old walker was too hard for the 4-foot-11 grandmother of two to push, so they got together and made a present, decking it with balloons and flags for a favorite customer, store manager Don Bennett

``Hi, Sylvia,'' says cashier Vincent Gibson, as Sand and her Cadillac of walkers glide into the store. Everyone knows Sylvia.

``She comes here a lot,'' Gibson said. ``Sometimes she tells us what she needs and we get it for her. It's hard for her to get around.''

Sand is a frequent Sav-on shopper - when you're 83, she said, you're on a first-name basis with your pharmacist and everyone else in the store.

She was saving up her money for that $200 Cruiser, stocked on a high shelf above the Sav-on pharmacy, waiting to see if Medicare would kick in some cash.

And then her drug store friends called her in one day.

``She had this decrepit de·crep·it

``I used to come home and you couldn't even talk to me,'' Sand said Wednesday during a brief stroll. ``It was murder pushing that thing all day.''

But, she adds, it'll be perfectly fine with a little work for someone who can better manage it.

``I'm fixing it up now and I'm going to take it over to the senior center,'' she said. ``I want to pass on something to someone else.''
