``Ben is a wonderful young man and a terrific quarterback,'' Canyon coach Harry Welch said. ``He's going to be a great college quarterback. This is a great victory for us because of the team we played. I love this team very much.''

Longshore completed 12 of 24 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown and three interceptions. He also scored twice on the ground.

Canyon clinched the victory when Nick Jurado recovered a fumbled punt return In American and Canadian football a punt return is one of the punt receiving team's options to respond to a punt. ``We didn't worry about who De La Salle was,'' Longshore said. ``We just came out and did our own thing. We had confidence in ourselves when no one else did.''

J.J. DiLuigi ran for 138 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, finishing the season with 2,159 yards and 39 touchdowns.

DeLa Salle's opening drive by blocking Michael Czyz's 29-yard field-goal attempt, and Canyon responded by driving 80 yards on eight plays for the game's first touchdown on Longshore's 1-yard run.

Longshore set up the score by completing all three of his passes on the drive, including a 42-yarder to Michael Loucks and a 23-yarder to Mark Urbina that set up the touchdown run.

After Canyon missed the extra point, De La Salle (I3-1) pulled ahead 7-6 on Tim Maupin's 4-yard run.

Canyon answered again.

The Cowboys drove 80 yards, this time on nine plays, culminating with Kenny Suber's 30-yard touchdown reception.

Longshore was the picture of efficiency on the drive.

He found J.J. DiLuigi on a 14-yard pass, then Urbina for 8 yards and Loucks for 15 before doing a nice job of avoiding a sack while stepping up in the pocket to hit Suber on a post near the goal line for the touchdown, putting the Cowboys ahead 12-7.

Two series later, DiLuigi scored on a 1-yard run with 14 seconds left in the first half to put Canyon up 20-7, and the Cowboys were off and running.

Going in, the biggest difference between the teams was Canyon's ability to pass the football.

So there was never a question how important Longshore's contributions would be, and the senior didn't disappoint dis·ap·point

Canyon amassed 241 yards in the first half against a storied program that supposedly had built its reputation on great defense.

ability to juke tacklers and never went down easily; Longshore showed poise and fine touch on his passes; and the receivers ran crisp routes, caught the football, and never appeared to fear getting hit.

De La Salle's vaunted option offense wasn't shut down completely. The Spartans totaled 177 yards in the first half but with just seven points to show for it.

It didn't take long for De La Salle to assert itself after halftime. Two minutes into the third quarter, John Hendershott scored on a 63-yard option pass from Maupin to close the gap to 20-13.

Then Longshore was intercepted on a badly overthrown pass two series later, and Hendershott returned it 37yards to the Canyon 32. But Canyon held tough, stopping Maupin on fourth-and-2 to keep the score 20-13.
