GRANADA FAILS TO CLOSE GAP; PALISADES CONTINUES DOMINANCE IN FINAL.

Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

The gulf between Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  High and the rest of the City Section's tennis teams is still a wide one, as evidenced by its 20-1/2-9 victory over Granada Granada, city, Nicaragua

The title was the Dolphins' fifth in a row and it was apparent from the start that Palisades was too talented a team for the Highlanders.

``We knew it was going to be tough,'' said Granada Hills doubles player Anand Anand or Ananda (Devnagari: आनंद) is a Sanskrit word that means "bliss", "happiness" or "joy." It is the most common first name in the Indian subcontinent and also a surname.  Murthy. ``We played hard, but they are just a really good team.''

Palisades' No. 1 singles player Artin Tafazoli, the defending City Section Individual champion, played with a slightly sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn.  and still swept his matches 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

Only Lee Weinstein managed to take a game from him.

``His ankle was hurting and we tried drop shots, lobs, anything to make him move,'' said Granada Hills coach Ron Wood Ronald David "Ronnie" Wood (born June 1, 1947 in Hillingdon, London) is an English rock guitarist and bassist best known as a member of The Rolling Stones, Faces, and The Jeff Beck Group.  said. ``And he still rolled through our guys pretty easily.''

 to win his matches.

``Since we have that streak going,'' Tafazoli said, ``we have to keep winning. It would be a disaster if we lost, so there was some pressure on us.''

The Dolphins (17-5) captured 13 of 16 singles matches and five of nine in doubles.

The doubles losses for the Highlanders (14-2) were especially harmful. It's the area they felt they had an advantage and were hoping to pick up several points.

``Obviously not taking them in doubles hurt,'' Wood said, ``and we needed to win a few more in singles to make it close, but they are just too strong. Our kids didn't play bad, they are just better than us. We didn't give up. We kept battling, but their tennis skills and experience were more than we could handle.''

A couple of bright spots for the Highlanders were the play of Weinstein at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Brian Mintz and Brad Steinberg. Weinstein, one of two seniors on the team, won two of his four matches, as did Mintz and Steinberg.

``We lose two good players (Weinstein and doubles player Dan Lim),'' Murthy said. ``But we have a lot coming back and hopefully we'll be better and we can get back here and do better.''

Said Palisades coach Bud Kling: ``Granada is a gritty grit·ty

team. They played tough and gave us a battle. Our players' (U.S. Tennis Association) tournament experience gave us the edge.''

were equally talented in singles and the teams knew that the match would be decided in doubles play.

True to prematch predictions, the teams split in singles 8-8, but the Yankees dominated in doubles, winning seven of nine on the way to an 18-1/2-11 victory.

The Wolves' No. 1 doubles team of Eugene Han and Jeff Kudisnevich picked up the team's only two doubles victories, while Sammy Choo and Alex Mangu each won three of their four singles matches.
