GRADUATE/EARNACAR INCENTIVE PROGRAM

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Oldsmobile Division of General Motors (NYSE: GM) and the Progressive National Baptist Convention are teaming up to inspire students to graduate from high school and college through a unique incentive, "Graduate/EarnaCar."
Dr. Charles G. Adams, president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and John Rock, Oldsmobile general manager, said the program is designed to keep kids drug-free, working and studying toward receiving their high school degree or college diploma. "It is one of the most positive ways we know to keep these high-risk kids in school and improving their life," Dr. Adams said.
"Mobility is a very important element in one's life, and this program provides it if you stay on course and graduate," Rock said. "We are delighted to have Oldsmobile involved and its Achieva the car of choice. Oldsmobile and its dealers will offer their complete support to see that this unique program is a success," he added.
Dr. Adams and Rock agreed that getting the power of the church and this country's oldest car company involved in this outstanding program not only will result in success in the classroom, but it will open other doors of economic opportunities for young blacks in other areas.
The program works like this: A student signs up and pledges that he or she will stay away from illegal drug activities, get into a work- related program and graduate from high school or college. Upon the successful fulfillment of that pledge, a participant that is affiliated with a church or non-profit organization promoting the same idea will get an Achieva for graduation, or some other Oldsmobile based on their agreement. "Learning to work hard, seeing tangible results for that effort, like a new Achieva, develops character and builds the individual's self-esteem which is critical and often lacking in those who take the wrong path," Dr. Adams said.
The program was founded by a group of businessmen in Cleveland working with a company called Corporate Line Embroidery. Oldsmobile and the Achieva were selected for two reasons. First, after driving the Achieva the Graduate/EarnaCar Program realized it was a great car with outstanding value. Also, they became aware of the 100,000-mile performance test in which the Achieva outperformed the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in cost to operate and maintain.
Second, Ed Welburn, Oldsmobile chief designer and a black man, designed the Achieva as well as the Cutlass Supreme. Dr. Adams said that Welburn is not only an outstanding designer, "but he is truly one of this country's outstanding black professionals and as one of GM's top designers is an excellent role model for all black students."
In addition to the Achieva and Cutlass Supreme, Welburn also designed the very racy and radical Aerotech engineering research vehicle which Oldsmobile recently used to set a number of world speed records with the new Aurora V8 engine.
Welburn was honored at a banquet of the Progressive National Baptist Convention at the Myrtle Beach Hilton Hotel during which Dr. Adams was the guest speaker on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
