GRACE CONFIRMS FDA ACTION; NO EFFECT ON FINANCIAL RESULTS

BOCA RATON, Fla., August 5 /PRNewswire/ -- W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) today confirmed that, during the 1993 second quarter, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued import alerts with respect to hemodialysis bloodlines manufactured at Grace's National Medical Care (NMC) Reynosa, Mexico plant and hemodialyzers manufactured in its facility in Dublin, Ireland. Products subject to FDA import alerts may not enter the United States until the FDA approves the facilities' quality assurance systems. Grace said that as a result of better than estimated income from acquisitions made in the past year, this action will not affect expected full year earnings growth from Grace's health care business, which reported a 36 percent increase in operating income for the first six months of 1993 compared with the first half of 1992.
Grace said that the FDA's actions relate to documentation procedures and practices, rather than the demonstrated safety or quality of Grace's products. Grace is confident that its procedures and controls assure quality products for safe use, and it is not aware of any claims questioning the performance or safety of the products covered by the FDA actions.
NMC is cooperating with the FDA and has instituted a comprehensive program to address its concerns. It is working with the FDA on a plan to partially lift the restrictions on bloodline imports in the very near future to assure the availability of bloodlines to United States dialysis patients.
Grace is the world's largest specialty chemicals company with a leadership position in specialized health care.
