GPU increases common stock dividend.

PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1995--The Board of Directors of General Public Utilities Corporation (NYSE:GPU) today increased the regular quarterly common stock dividend by 2 cents a share, or 4.4 percent, to 47 cents a share.

James R. Leva, chairman, president and chief executive officer of GPU, said, "Our action today is well supported by the continuing financial health of GPU in an increasingly competitive environment. With GPU's dividend payout ratio below the industry average, we are able to support dividend growth that is above the industry average.

"This good news for our shareholders sends a positive signal to the investment community about our continuing commitment to our dividend policy," Leva said.

This is the ninth increase in the dividend since it was reinstated in 1987. The increased dividend is payable May 31, 1995 to shareholders of record April 28, 1995.

GPU is a registered electric utility holding company. Its three operating utility subsidiaries -- Jersey Central Power and Light Company, Pennsylvania Electric Company, and Metropolitan Edison Company -- provide electric service to more than 1.9 million customers in a service territory encompassing about half the land area of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Other subsidiaries are GPU Nuclear Corporation, which operates and maintains the System's nuclear generating stations and GPU Service Corporation, which provides corporate support to System companies. Energy Initiatives Inc. develops and operates non-utility generating facilities.
