GPU Energy Customers Restored to Service.

READING, PA.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1999--

GPU Energy has ended service interruptions to customers in the Northeast Monmouth County area as a second transformer was placed back on line today at 1:00 p.m.

In addition, GPU Energy is currently in the process of installing a new transformer. The transformer is scheduled to be on line later tonight.

The interruptions during the last two days were needed to avoid the possibility of wider power outages and to allow a staff of more than 20 to make repairs. Although all customers affected by the Red Bank substation problems have had their electric service restored, the company is urging its customers to conserve energy usage until 9:00 tonight.

GPU Energy's customer efforts to conserve energy will enable repair crews to fully install the new transformers tonight.

GPU Energy requests that customers take the following steps to significantly reduce the use of electricity:

-- If health permits, turn off air conditioners, as well as all

non-essential appliances and electric lights;

-- Do not open refrigerators or freezers;

-- Avoid using electrically heated water or major household

appliances like electric stoves, dishwashers and clothes

dryers;

-- Close curtains and blinds to keep the sun out and retain

cooler air inside your homes;

-- Check backup facilities for electric-powered medical equipment

and battery operated radios and flashlights, should they be

needed.
