Hurricane Floyd was the sixth named storm, fourth hurricane, and third major hurricane in the 1999 Atlantic hurricane season. . These restoration efforts began Thursday, September 16, and continued through the night. As of 2:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17, there were approximately 186,000 GPU Energy customers without electric service in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. There are about 315 line crews working to restore electric service to these customers. In GPU Energy's Pennsylvania service area, there were about 54,000 customers who remain without power. More than 100 line crews are working to restore electric service to these customers. The hardest hit areas in Pennsylvania include the Reading, Hamburg Hamburg, city, Germany Hamburg (häm`b rkh), officially Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg), city (1994 pop. , Boyerton, Topton and
Easton areas.
In New Jersey, approximately 132,000 GPU Energy customers were without electricity. The company's northern New Jersey service area was the hardest hit area, with more than 125,000 customers without power in Bernardsville, Dover, Newton, Washington, Fleminton, Boonton and Summit. There are more than 130 line crews working to restore service in these areas, with additional crews on their way to assist with the restoration. Restoration efforts in these areas could continue through the weekend. GPU Energy is offering the following emergency tips for customers in the event of electrical service Electrical service, in building wiring, refers to the wiring that connects the electric utility's cables in the street to the building.
