GPU Energy Announces Series of Technologies Focused on Customer Choice, Control and Pricing Options; GPU Seeks Proven Tech Companies to Grow Energy Services Business.


MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1996--GPU Energy customers will soon have more choice and control over lower cost energy in their homes with a new service initiative called ACCESS(SM), a broad umbrella of services and technologies to be tested by GPU GPU: see secret police.

The first ACCESS(SM) test will focus on home energy management, offering pricing options and potential savings tailored to individuals' lifestyles. With ACCESS(SM) energy management, customers can choose to use appliances when energy costs are lower.

GPU will begin to test market the ACCESS(SM) energy management service in New Jersey with select employees in August and 240 customers by November. The ACCESS(SM) energy management component introduces variable pricing Most firms use a fixed price policy. Howe intends to accelerate customer offerings by seeking partnerships, business alliances and possible equity interests in firms that can provide value to customers. These firms must have the capability to work with GPU to customize these technologies to meet customer needs and develop entirely new products and services," said Howe. "This initial market test will enable GPU to offer different pricing packages to customers and find out their preferences.  notification, home security, off-site operation and maintenance monitoring of appliances and other innovative home technologies. For businesses, GPU is investigating water and gas company co-metering to enhance customer billing. As ACCESS(SM) services grow, Howe said GPU intends to monitor how customers interact with technology and their preference for energy-related services.

The energy management component of ACCESS(SM) includes a home thermostat thermostat, automatic device that regulates temperature in an enclosed area by controlling heating or refrigerating systems. It is commonly connected to one of these systems, turning it on or off in order to maintain a predetermined temperature.  with an easy to use programmable unit to control room temperature, lights, water heaters and other appliances. The ACCESS(SM) service consists of non-intrusive, easy to install units that use existing household wiring. Existing technology that turns lights on and off, usually achieved with simple plug-in boxes, may also be centrally controlled through this system.

The ACCESS(SM) energy management service test selection process is underway and several GPU employee volunteers have been identified. Requirements include ownership of a single family home, and use of central air conditioning air conditioning, mechanical process for controlling the humidity, temperature, cleanliness, and circulation of air in buildings and rooms. Indoor air is conditioned and regulated to maintain the temperature-humidity ratio that is most comfortable and healthful.  or at least two room air conditioning units.
