: GPU) announced today definitive information about the contingent common stock dividend previously declared by the Board of Directors.

GPU and FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) announced previously that their merger is expected to become effective on November 7, 2001.

On October 4, 2001, GPU's Board of Directors declared a quarterly dividend of $0.545 per share on its common stock, pro rated at a rate of $0.006056 per day for the period August 29, 2001 to the effective date of the merger. Consequently, with an effective merger date of November 7, 2001, GPU will pay a dividend to its shareholders of record at the close of business November 6, 2001, payable on November 28, 2001, of $ 0.42392 per share. In addition, FirstEnergy has announced that it will pay a dividend to shareholders of record November 7, 2001, which will include GPU shareholders receiving FirstEnergy common stock in the merger, payable by December 7, 2001, of $.095811 per FirstEnergy share.
