The award was granted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in Golden, Colorado, as part of the U.S. Department of Energy, is the United States' primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development.  (NREL NREL National Renewable Energy Laboratory

) of Washington D.C.

As part of the effort, the companies will be attaching solar collectors to existing structures in Earth Day park to demonstrate the ability to locate solar facilities without the need to use vacant land.

Energy produced by the project will provide about 70 percent of the energy required to power streetlighting in the park.

"This project is important to us and indeed the entire power industry because it demonstrates the viability of `photovoltaic' or solar energy in areas traditionally considered too crowded for such applications," said Scott Weiner, vice president - corporate development at GPU.

GPU is among a number of energy resource companies gathering in California this week for the annual meeting of the Utility PhotoVoltaic The generation of voltage by a material that is exposed to light in the visible and invisible ranges. Installation of the system is to take place during the next month. It will be unveiled on April 21, the commemoration of Earth Day.

Two locations are earmarked for installation of the panels. One is a canopy over a stairwell stair·well

"It is particularly significant that this effort will be launched in a park, a facility set aside for the purposes of land preservation," explained Weiner. "This technology will provide us with not only the obvious benefits that we reap from using a renewable source of energy. In addition, at a time of concern about development and land use, we are learning that we can expand energy capacity with no additional impact on land. That is exciting to us as an energy resources company dedicated to environmental stewardship."
