GOVT. TO RETURN TO INT'L CAPITAL MARKETS.
The Jamaican Government is looking to return to the international
capital markets to raise money for budgetary support within the next few
weeks, says Prime Minister Percival Patterson, reports CANA (September
16, 1999). The Government plans to borrow US$400 million on the
international market over the 1999/2000 financial year to help fund its
J$160 billion (US$4.2 billion) budget. But it had to withdraw an
initial US$250 million bond issue in June, following extreme nervousness
among financiers regarding the state of emerging markets and U.S.
interest rate policies.
