GOVERNMENT AWARDS $16 MILLION TO SHELDAHL-LED CONSORTIUM

NORTHFIELD, Minn., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Sheldahl, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHEL), said today that it had signed an agreement with the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), an agency of the United States government, stipulating that the agency will award a Sheldahl-led industry consortium a total of $16 million over the next two years.
The consortium is dedicated to developing products, processes, and markets for multichip modules (MCMs) based on Sheldahl's proprietary Novaclad(R) and NovaLink(TM) technology. The ARPA award brings the total consortium investment to more than $62 million, $20 million of which Sheldahl has committed in the form of a new full-scale advanced manufacturing facility designed to meet the high-volume demand for its proprietary materials technology. The Sheldahl technology enables MCM end-users to pack more electronic functions on an increasingly smaller surface area at a more economical cost.
In an earlier release (10/14/93), Sheldahl said that consortium members include end-users of its technology, Delco Electronics Corporation, Silicon Graphics, Wireless Access, and Hughes Missile Systems; along with a supplier support and manufacturing group. Current applications that will benefit from MCM/chip packaging technologies include high-performance workstations, notebook and laptop computers, personal communication devices, and automotive control modules and navigational systems. Sheldahl said that the commercial MCM/chip package market is estimated to reach $450 million by 1996.
Sheldahl is the leading manufacturer of flexible interconnects in the United States. The company's core technology involves the conversion of basic materials into technical laminates that are sold as foils and tapes. The company also uses these laminates as the base for such products as antennas, electronic shielding, insulation, flexible interconnects, and specialized fabrications. Sheldahl has strategically located design and technical centers in the Western, Midwestern, and Eastern regions of the U.S., and in Great Britain, as well as an administrative/sales office in France.
