GOV. GEORGE VOINOVICH SUPPORTS HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SMALL BUSINESS
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ohio Farm Bureau today commended Gov. George Voinovich for following through on one of his campaign promises by supporting a health insurance bill that helps small businesses and the self-employed, including Ohio's farmers.
The bill, which garnered Voinovich's support on Nov. 5, was introduced into the Ohio Senate by Sen. Robert Ney, R-Barnesville. The legislation would allow farmers and other self-employed people to deduct all of their insurance premiums from their state income taxes. Currently, farmers and the self-employed cannot deduct those costs from their state income taxes and can deduct only 25 percent of their premiums from their federal tax returns.
"Governor Voinovich's support of this bill shows that he understands the burden self-employed people bear. It's not right that large companies can deduct insurance costs as a business expense for their employees while small businesses cannot," according to Fred Finney, president of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
The legislation also would allow those businesses with fewer than 50 employees to purchase basic health insurance without certain state mandated coverages.
"We appreciate the understanding of state government about how financially difficult it is for farmers and self-employed to provide insurance for their employees," Finney said. "We can only hope that our federal elected officials will take notice and support similar action in Washington, D.C."
