GOV. CASEY ISSUES STATEMENT ON USAIR/BRITISH AIRWAYS AGREEMENT

HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Robert P. Casey today issued the following statement regarding the announcement that British Airways has terminated its agreement to invest $750 million in USAir:
"I am disappointed that British Airways has withdrawn its proposed investment in USAir.
"This agreement would have meant a $750 million investment in USAir, Pennsylvania's primary air carrier which employs more than 14,000 workers statewide.
"I am encouraged, however, by the comments of USAir Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Seth Schofield that USAir will continue its discussions with British Airways regarding alternative relationships and opportunities.
"I am also encouraged that USAir is committed to positioning the airline for long-term success in the world economy, irrespective of this transaction.
"The Commonwealth will continue its commitment to working with USAir in its ongoing efforts to improve its overall operations and enhance its strong presence here in Pennsylvania."
