GOTTSCHALKS ANNOUNCES DECEMBER SALES RESULTS

 FRESNO, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Gottschalks Inc. (NYSE: GOT) announced that December 1993 sales increased 5.3% to $70.8 million from $67.2 million in December 1992. Same store sales for the month of December increased 2.1%. On a year-to-date basis, total sales increased 2.8% to $323.1 million from year-to-date sales of $314.2 million in the prior year. Same store sales on a year-to-date basis increased 0.7% from the prior year.
 "We are extremely pleased with the strong sales performance during the highest volume month of the year. These increases were especially strong when considering the fact that last year's December also had increases in sales as well," said Joe Levy, chairman and chief executive officer. "We see this strong performance as a continuation of the upward sales trends we have been experiencing during recent months. We believe these positive sales results, combined with our program of managing expenses, will translate to a strong and profitable fourth quarter," Levy added.
