GOT BOOTS?; FESTIVAL HOME ON THE RANGE.

Byline: Teresa Jimenez Daily News Staff Writer

Time to put on your cowboy hat and mud-sloshing boots because Santa Clarita's fifth annual Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival will arrive this weekend - and so will El Nino.

Come rain or shine, nationally known performers will bring their shows to Melody Ranch in Newhall. City organizers have been working diligently dil·i·gent

``We're 99 percent sold out. We figure we'll be sold out by the weekend,'' said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz. ``We want people to come and cowboy up because it's a lot of fun.''

``I don't think it's going to be as intense as the last one was,'' Hoffer said.

Most of the performances will be held in indoor sound stages anyway, Ortiz said. Other areas are being prepared to offer some protection from expected showers.

El Nino predictions certainly did not stop fans from purchasing tickets for the festival. Ortiz said the city expects anywhere from 10,000 to 13,000 people to attend.

Tickets are $6 and will allow visitors to buy goods from vendors selling Western items and purchase goodies good·y 1   Informal

In addition, performers Dave Starney, Brenn Hill, Lone Prairie and others will sing and play from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Of course, visitors will get a peek at Melody Ranch, which is closed to the public except during the Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival.

``This is a chance to see it,'' Ortiz said. ``It's a working movie ranch A movie ranch is a ranch that is at least partially dedicated to being used as a site for the production of motion pictures.

Organizers made last-minute arrangements to bring in a bridge to span a creek that runs across Melody Ranch, Ortiz said.

The creek generally is dry or has a small flow of water, and cars can cross it without a bridge, Ortiz said. Though guests do not drive to the festival - taking shuttle buses instead - the city wants to make sure the buses can travel the stretch without problems, she said.

The shuttle stop is located on 12th Street at Arch Street, near San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles.
