GORTON VOTE LEAVES FOREST PRODUCTS WORKERS STANDING AT THE ALTAR
WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was released today by Mike Draper, executive secretary of the Western Council of Industrial Workers, regarding the U.S. Senate's vote on an amendment offered by Senator Slade Gorton (R-WA) to the Interior Appropriations bill on the health of federal forests:
"On behalf of the 30,000 members of the Western Council of Industrial Workers, I am extremely discouraged by the Senate's vote to table Senator Gorton's amendment.
"Ironically, in their single-minded crusade to lock-up all of our national forests, strident preservationists and their champions in the Senate have only succeeded in jeopardizing the health of our national forests. Salvage operations are an integral component of total forest health management.
"I am particularly disappointed by the Democrats in the Senate who opposed this legislation. With today's vote, our long-time friends have left us standing at the altar.
"Unfortunately, the majority members of the U.S. Senate do not seem to understand the vital link between salvage sales, forest health and the need to provide some relief to the forest products workers and timber communities that are suffering from the ongoing timber supply crisis in the Pacific Northwest and northern California.
"We will continue to work with these Senators to help them gain a better understanding of the plight of our members.
"In the meantime, we will continue to work with all serious parties to develop balanced, comprehensive federal forest management legislation."
