, eyeing his political future, met with allies in vote-rich California on Friday as he praised the California League of Conservation Voters The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) is a nonpartisan lobbying and educational organization which focuses on environmental issues affecting California.  for leading the nation in environmental advocacy for the past quarter century.

At the group's anniversary breakfast at a swank Beverly Hills hotel The Beverly Hills Hotel is a hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, at 9641 Sunset Boulevard. It was opened on May 12, 1912 and started by Margaret J. Anderson and her son, Stanley S. Anderson, who had been managing the Hollywood Hotel. , executive director Sam Schuchat introduced Gore as a ``true environmental visionary.'' The vice president, who authored the book ``Earth in the Balance,'' received a standing ovation by some 200 people as he walked to the podium.

``California has led the nation, the CLCV CLCV California League of Conservation Voters  has led California,'' Gore told them. ``You helped to pass the Coastal Development Initiative. You campaigned up and down the state for the Clean Water Act. I hope you realize how much of a difference you make.''

The California League of Conservation Voters, a nonpartisan electoral arm of the environmental movement, campaigns for candidates who are committed to solving environmental problems. Such support can help Gore, especially in California - a state key to a presidential win - as he lays the foundation for his presidential bid in 2000.

It was the vice president's second trip to California this week. He left Friday afternoon.

Gore referred to the group's members as his allies, noting they ``worked in the trenches, registering, educating and turning out voters.''

Gore also lauded the group for its work in helping to pass the California Desert Protection Act, which protects more than 6.6 million acres of the state's desert as federal parkland and wilderness area Broadly, a wilderness area is a region where the land is left in a state where human modifications are minimal; that is, as a wilderness.
