recounted in the three counties, Gore had picked up just 154 votes - three in Palm Beach, 118 in Broward and 33 in Miami-Dade. If the pattern held, he would still be 500 votes short.

Enter the dimpled ballot factor.

In the three counties, there are about 27,000 ``undervotes,'' ballots that didn't register a presidential vote on machines but may have an indentation indicating a preference.

In Palm Beach County, there were 276 dimpled ballots for Gore and 73 dimpled ballots for Bush that weren't tallied in the 103 precincts that were recounted - a net gain of 203.

With 428 precincts still not counted, Gore stands to gain more than 800 more votes in Palm Beach County if the pattern holds true.

All the undervotes in all three counties have been set aside and dimpled ballots could be counted at the direction of county canvassing boards - subject to a court challenge.
