GOP lawmakers offer immigration compromise bill.


In an attempt to unify Republicans in Congress over the contentious issue of immigration reform Immigration reform is the common term used in political discussions regarding changes to immigration policy. In a certain sense, reform can be general enough to include promoted, expanded, or open immigration, but in reality discussions of reform often deal with the aspect of , Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-Texas) and Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) have introduced the Border Integrity and Immigration Reform Act.

The House and Senate each have passed immigration reform bills earlier this year, but Congress is at an impasse over the issue, The plan would start with a border security strategy similar to what the House passed in December and require the more than 11 million illegal immigrants to "self-deport." Once the administration certified several benchmarks had been met, their plan would allow those would-be immigrants to apply for temporary visas from outside the U.S. The centers would be managed by private companies and licensed by the Department of Homeland Security Noun 1. ). After 12 years, the immigrants could apply for a five-year visa, and after 17 years, they could seek green cards authorizing permanent residency, thus allowing them to eventually apply for citizenship.
