GOODYEAR TIRES HELP CHRYSLER SET ELECTRIC RECORD

LOS ANGELES, March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- New specially designed energy- efficient tires from Goodyear rolled into downtown Los Angeles this morning carrying Chrysler's record-setting electric TEVan.
Goodyear Momentum tires helped Chrysler set new standards for durability and performance for an electric vehicle. The battery-powered trek began in Detroit, about 3,000 miles and nine days ago.
"We were excited to be part of this record-setting trip. For Goodyear, it was a valuable learning experience to see how our tires performed on this grueling trip," said John Kotanides, the Goodyear engineer who developed the Momentum tires.
Momentums have 40 percent less rolling resistance than standard original equipment tires that normally equip the van, Kotanides said.
"Rolling resistance is key, no matter what the power source is," Kotanides said, "because it translates to drag on the power train. By reducing it, we make the vehicle that much more energy efficient."
Tire rolling resistance has been reduced by 42 percent since 1980. For passenger cars, a five to seven percent reduction in rolling resistance equals a one percent fuel savings. If every motorist in the United States had tires like Goodyear's Momentum used on Chrysler's TEVan, the country would save about 110 million barrels of oil annually.
Higher inflation pressure of 50 psi in the specially designed tire (compared to 35 for conventional tires) accounts for 12 percent of the energy efficiency in the Momentum, Kotanides said. The fuel-efficient tread compound
contributes 10 percent Contributing the remainder are reduced tread depth, special mold shape and internal construction.
Goodyear engineers designed an extra load belt under the tire's tread to handle the extra load of the TEVan.
"We achieved our objectives without sacrificing tire performance," Kotanides said. "Characteristics such as ride and handling are comparable to our standard original equipment tires."
Goodyear has developed tires especially designed for electric vehicles for a number of original equipment manufacturers, some of which participate in the Solar and Electric 500, held annually in Phoenix, Ariz. Goodyear is the official tire supplier for the race.
Chrysler plans to submit the trip to the Guiness Book of Records.
